Now the USA government's road safety agency wants to know why. It also added it will figure out if any other automakers have utilized similar air bag control units and if they posed a safety threat. In addition, the agency will try to determine if other vehicle makers are using potentially faulty parts made by ZF-TRW. Hyundai on Feb 27 recalled nearly 155,000 Sonatas after determining that an electrical overstress failed to inflate the airbags during collisions.

Kia has not recalled any vehicles yet, but the company did release a statement that read "Kia will act promptly to conduct a safety recall, if it determines that a recall would be appropriate". NHTSA says it is now aware of six crashes in which air bags failed to deploy. Four of the crashes with significant damage occurred in the Sonata with the other two coming in the Forte. A passenger was killed and the driver was injured.

Last week, USA consumers filed class-action complaints in Miami federal court to recover costs against units of General Motors and Volkswagen as well as Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz and Fiat Chrysler. A spokesperson for Kia could not be reached for comment. The accidents have allegedly caused several deaths and injuries.

Hyundai spokesperson Jim Trainor said dealers will consider offering a loaner vehicle to people until the issue can be repaired. 'It's very unusual to have that kind of collision'.

Hyundai Motor shares tumbled 4.8 percent while Kia Motors lost 3.7 percent.
