US Republicans shut down House Russia probe over Democratic objections

Conaway, who replaced Devin Nunes in his role, said that he expected the Democrats to suggest "extensive changes" to the report, and Adam Schiff, who leads the Democrats in the House Intelligence Committee, insisted that there is "clear and ovewhelming" evidence of collusion. The Republican leading the committee's work, Michael Conaway - he's from Texas - says that they found inappropriate meetings, they found bad judgment, but nothing beyond that.

"On a fundamental aspect of our investigation - substantiating the conclusions of the Intelligence Community's assessment that the Russians interfered in our democracy to advance the Trump campaign, hurt Clinton and sow discord - we should have been able to issue a common report".

It also contradicts the preliminary findings of committee Democrats like ranking member Adam Schiff, D-Calif., who told reporters last month that based on what he had seen, there was "ample evidence" of collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

Mike Conaway, who leads the inquiry, said the House Intelligence Committee agreed with USA intelligence agencies that Russian Federation interfered in the race.

The report does recognize Russian meddling in the 2016 elections, and will make more than 25 recommendations, including ways to improve election security. Schiff even says that as more information comes out via Mueller's investigation, via reporters and the Senate Intelligence Committee - that Republicans are going to rue the day that they wrap this investigation up early.

But he said Republicans did not find proof that it was to sway the election in favour of President Donald Trump.

Soon after the Republican announcement on Monday evening, Trump quickly celebrated on Twitter, reports Politico news.

File the Nunes Committee report and the Trump tweet under "LOL".

The President is now wielding a powerful new weapon in his war of credibility with America's spy agencies over their view that Russian Federation helped put him in the White House, after House Republicans suddenly shuttered their probe into election meddling.

Previous year the Senate Intelligence Committee accepted the views of the intelligence community that the Russians were behind the hacking of the Democratic National Committee.

SHAPIRO: And as you said, this House Intelligence Committee has become so partisan and politicized. Republicans and Democrats on the panel are unlikely to come to a bipartisan. I think they are clearly correct in this.

"Congressional Republicans prioritized politics over whats best for the American people", said Rep. Donald McEachin (D-NJ).

Last month, in indictments handed down by a grand jury comprised of citizens who had reviewed the evidence, Mueller described how 13 Russian citizens and three Russian organizations had allegedly sought to disrupt the 2016 election.

"Putin and the Russian Government aspired to help President-elect Trump's election chances when possible by discrediting Secretary Clinton and publicly contrasting her unfavorably to him", that report reads.
