BMW has made significant progress in powertrain development, culminating in the fifth-generation eDrive electric system.

The BMW Concept iX3 had its first outing at the Beijing show and is the first model from the BMW brand to be driven purely by electric power.

Called BMW Wireless Charging, it's available now as an option for the BMW 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid sedan. As for the electric motor, it does not require any rare earths.

The name says a lot about BMW's newest design study.

BMW plans to introduce a new modular design that will allow all future models to offer an electric variant.

BMW isn't the only carmarker to jump on the electric bandwagon. Entirely electric, it's powered by an electric motor that draws electricity from a 70-kWh battery pack which stores enough juice for about 250 miles of range in the European testing cycle. Like the one used by the Audi e-tron, the i3X's battery is said to have been designed with 150kW fast-charging stations in mind, making a full charge possible in just 30 minutes thanks to clever battery cooling and temperature control technology. The energy storage system has a newly developed Charging Control Unit and is created to be hooked up to fast-charging stations generating up to 150 kW. The closed double kidney with the blue accentuation continues the BMW i Vision Dynamics brand already featured in the BMW i Vision Dynamics.

In the front, the kidney and the brand emblem show the affiliation with the BMW i brand. These styling cues provide a striking contrast against the Moonstone Silver matt exterior paint finish. There's also lots of blue highlighting to reinforce the car's electric credentials, while it also gets "aerodynamically optimised" alloy wheels.

BMW has taken the wraps off a concept that previews its first all-electric SUV, as well as signposting the German company's EV future.
