Dead After Fire Breaks Out at Trump Tower

New York Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the cause of Saturday's blaze was not yet known but the apartment was "virtually entirely on fire" when firefighters arrived after 5.30pm.

"It was a very hard fire, as you can imagine", Nigro said in a briefing outside the building in midtown Manhattan.

Trump's family has an apartment on the top floors of the 58-story building, but he has spent little time in NY since taking office.

ABC News reported that the victim, Todd Brassner, was pulled unconscious from his apartment at the luxury Fifth Avenue sky scraper and died later at the hospital. Property records showed Brassner was an art dealer who had purchased his 50th-floor unit in 1996.

During Saturday's press briefing, Nigro also revealed that six of his firefighters suffered non-fatal injuries during the operation. An investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, the commercial portions of Trump Tower have their required fire sprinklers, the DOB rep said. Very confined (well-built building).

Saturday's fire is the 2nd fire in Mr. Trump's Fifth Opportunity constructing this year: 2 civilians suffered small injuries and a firemen was injured by particles in a fire on January 8 on the top of the structure. When asked to comment on the President's tweet, Nigro said the building "sure stood up quite well".

Early talks for the proposed bill suggested that all residential buildings be required to install sprinklers, which irked developers, including Trump.

Trump called city officials like famed Queens politician Archie Spigner, whose council committee compiled the bill, to argue that sprinklers were too expensive - at $4 per square foot - to install throughout an entire building, the New York Times reported at the time.

President Donald Trump and his family resided full-time in a triplex in the 68-story tower before they moved to Washington, D.C. and the President stays at the property when in NY - no members of the Trump family were in the building on Saturday.

The president, his wife Melania and son Barron have lived in the tower block in the past but were in Washington DC at the time of the blaze on Saturday evening. The headquarters of the Trump Organization is on the 26th floor.

Some residents said they didn't get any notification from building management to leave the building.

Despite not receiving a notification from the skyscraper's management team to evacuate, the terrified 76-year-old managed to make it out alive.

The president tweeted a thank you message to New York City firefighters.

"We had many floors to search, and stairways".
