In a move that has baffled people around the world, Britain is engaged in a fight with Tom Evans and Kate James to deny life support to their hospitalized 23-month-old son, Alfie - condemning him to death, even though the toddler's parents want desperately to keep him alive.

The terminally ill baby Alfie Evans could be taken home within a day or two after a meeting between his parents and doctors at the hospital where he is being cared for.

Alfie Evans' father Tom Evans called for supporters of Alfie and his family to "stand down" so they can begin "building a bridge" with Alder Hey Children's Hospital and its staff.

The Court of Appeal upheld a ruling on Wednesday preventing the 23-month-old from travelling overseas after life support was withdrawn.

"Moved by the prayers and enormous solidarity shown little Alfie Evans, I renew my appeal that the suffering of his parents may be heard and that their desire to seek new forms of treatment may be granted", Pope Francis tweeted on April 23.

"I've had a feeling about Alfie's condition for a long time now ... he's been off the ventilator for three and there's been no deterioration", Evans told reporters outside the hospital.

But a doctor treating Alfie, who can not be named for legal reasons, said that for Alfie to be allowed home would require a "sea change" in attitude from the child's family, and they feared that in the "worst case" they would try to take the boy overseas.

"Since he's been off the life support, he has proved every doctor and every judge wrong", he said.

"We affirm our conviction that all those who are and have been taking the agonising decisions regarding the care of Alfie Evans act with integrity and for Alfie's good as they see it", the statement read, in part.

Michael Mylonas, the hospital trust's lawyer, said on Wednesday that there was "no new medical evidence" to contradict the evidence given before the High Court in February.

However, the court of appeal upheld the High Court's verdict, rejecting all grounds raised by the parents.

On Tuesday, a British judge ruled against the parents and declared that Evans could not be removed and flown to the Vatican for further treatment, arguing it would just prolong the child's suffering.

Alfie's plight has received considerable worldwide media attention in recent days, especially in Italy and the United States.

"Alfie is doing good, 72 hours independent breathing", Evans added.

Alfie's case has drawn global attention, with officials in largely Catholic Poland and Italy implicitly criticizing Britain's courts and state-run National Health Service.

Polish President Andrzej Duda demanded over Twitter Alfie be saved.

On Wednesday, bosses at the Liverpool hospital defended staff who they said had endured a "barrage" of abuse. Alfie was granted Italian citizenship Monday after Pope Francis intervened on his behalf, so that he could be transferred to a hospital in Rome.
