Minutes investigation questions Allegiant Airlines safety, airline battles back

The "60 Minutes" report did not reference any flights out of IL. There have been far too many aborted takeoffs, inflight mechanical problems and emergency landings involving Allegiant planes in recent years.

The Associated Press reported that investigators with the news program found that between January 1, 2016, and October 2017, the Las Vegas-based airline experienced more than 100 serious mechanical incidents, including aborted takeoffs, rapid descents, flight control malfunctions and midair engine failures.

Many Allegiant Airline passengers are concerned after a CBS News 60 Minutes investigation reported the airline has been flying under the radar when it comes to safety.

During its review of the airline, the FAA "did not find any systemic safety or regulatory problems, but it did identify a number of less serious issues, which Allegiant addressed".

Newsweek reports John Goglia, the former presidential appointee to the National Transport Safety Board, called the airline's record of 60 unscheduled landings and 46 in-flight emergencies "very, very high for an airline of its size".

"It is unfortunate and disappointing that CBS" "60 Minutes' has chosen to air a false narrative about Allegiant and the FAA", Allegiant vice president of operations Eric Gust said. It operates 15 flights out of Stockton each week.

Allegiant Air has landed at Plattsburgh International Airport since 2007.

However, locally, Allegiant's record of poor on-time performance and unhelpful customer service has caused some travel agents to steer clear of the airline.

In fact, the Las Vegas route has been so popular, Hastert announced Allegiant will add a fourth flight in October when it begins service on Mondays.

A new report accuses Allegiant Air of being the "most dangerous" airline in the United States.

The airline's statement said it expects employees to adhere to all company procedures and policies, including safety procedures, and denied the claims of critics in the report that there is pressure to put profitability over safety. Airline experts said because the company's fleet of planes included many older models that had been retired by other airlines, maintenance was an issue.

"If you're in the airliner, it is landed and is filling up with smoke, I would not wait for the flight crew to tell you to evacuate", he said.

US Representative Charlie Crist, a Florida Democrat, wrote separately to the Transportation Department, demanding the agency "take action to improve passenger safety", as well as to hold Allegiant accountable for past safety failures.

Since the 1990s, the FAA has stressed voluntary reporting of potential safety issues before taking punitive enforcement actions.
