"Mama Winnie would encourage us to go attend school and not leave the country to join the ANC's military wing, Umkhonto weSizwe, because she used to say she wanted educated leaders", said Mkhabane.

South Africans trooped out in their thousands to pay last respect to Winnie Mandela, wife of former President Nelson Mandela as she is laid to rest on Saturday.

A black hearse carrying the body of Mandela, one of the most divisive figures in the anti-apartheid struggle, slowly drove to her house led by uniformed men bearing the flag of her African National Congress (ANC) party.

"It is sad that she had to pass away without some of us knowing her".

Mandela-Dlamini - who struggled to begin her speech as she was interrupted by bouts of coughing - said popular history had erased Madikizela-Mandela's contributions and other women from the liberation struggle.
