Tesla to increase production of Model 3 cars: Musk

It is the second time since February that Tesla has halted its production line for the Model 3 at its Fremont, California plant, reports the Guardian.

The announcement to increase the production of Model 3 to more than 3,000 per week came three days after Musk expressed confidence he could speed up the production.

And until the company achieves its production goal of 5,000 units a week, many of those order holders who want to buy all-wheel-drive Model 3s or more affordable Model 3s with the shorter-range battery pack will be left waiting a while longer.

"These periods are used to improve automation and systematically address bottlenecks in order to increase production rates", a company spokesperson said. "This means that we will be adding another shift to general assembly, body and paint", CEO Elon Musk wrote, adding that TSLA would hire ~400 people per week for several weeks. Musk describes the contractor situation within Tesla as being like a "Russian nesting doll" and that some perform "worse than a drunken sloth". "This should set us up for Model 3 production of 3,000 to 4,000 per week next month", Musk wrote.

"Another set of upgrades starting in late May should be enough to unlock production capacity of 6,000 Model 3 vehicles per week by the end of June", Musk added in the letter, according to Electrek. But Autopacific analyst Dave Sullivan says manufacturing doesn't normally stop for days, especially nine months after production began. It was planned by them when the production started that manufacturing of 5,000 cars a week will be done in 2017.

The Model 3 is key to the company's efforts to generate revenue to repay investors and push development of other electric vehicles. That's thanks in large part to the company's investment in the Model 3, which isn't likely to earn a profit anytime soon.

While Tesla has been in the news for myriad issues lately, the factor that matters is how the demand for the Model 3 is affected, according to KeyBanc analyst Brad Erickson in a note obtained by TheFly.com.
