Harpreet AD Singh, the Head of Flight Safety at Air India: "We want to get to the bottom of the severe turbulence to try and understand what happened".

The incident comes on the heels of a woman dying of her injuries after she was partially pulled through a broken window on Southwest Airlines flight 1380.

Sources said there was no damage to the outside window and there was no de-pressurisation. While the injured were attended to by the aircraft's emergency response team, upon landing, they were rushed to the nearest hospital. So when the turbulence hit, they hit the overhead cabin because of a bump.

The turbulence on the Air India flight has drawn parallels to an incident during a Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight in October 2014.

Forty-three-year-old mum Jennifer Riordan was pulled back into the plane by other passengers but died from her injuries.
