YouTube Kids To Add New Parental Controls

Once the new setting is turned on, users can pick collections from trusted creators such as PBS and Kidz Bop, or themed collections curated by YouTube Kids itself.

YouTube Kids was introduced in 2015 for children of preschool age and older, and it says it has more than 11 million weekly viewers. While the ability to turn search off had always existed, the tightened restrictions mean that search off will not include recommendations from the broader YouTube Kids corpus.

One of these is a feature which will be available later this year, where parents can "specifically handpick" the videos and channels available to their child in the app, said YouTube in a blogpost announcing the changes.

The Google team today announced three new features for the popular YouTube Kids app that it says will give parents even more control around the content that can be accessed by the kids-friendly app.

YouTube is adding new features to YouTube KIds, its app for kids, to ensure that parents can better control what content their kids see in the app. Earlier this month, it a consortium of consumer rights and privacy groups filed an FTC complaint against YouTube, alleging that its main YouTube site, not YouTube Kids, collects children's data without parental consent, in violation of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act or COPPA. Now, YouTube is giving all parents that level of control within the app.

YouTube Kids unveiled on Wednesday new features meant to give parents more control over what their children watch, following an outcry late past year over disturbing videos that landed on the app.

Like everything else related to Google, YouTube uses algorithms and machine learning to automate the process of weeding out inappropriate content.

YouTube said 6.7 million of the inappropriate videos were spotted by a machine. The Google subsidiary announced that it removed about 8.3 million videos during the fourth quarter of a year ago, many of which were flagged before they gained tractions. But parents started to notice that violent videos were able to pass through its filter, too.

"It's been clear for a long time now that algorithmic filtering on YouTube Kids doesn't work and giving parents the ability to select more human-reviewed content is an improvement", Golin said.
