A Tesla in autopilot mode created yet more unfortunate headlines for the company when it slammed into a police cruiser in Laguna Beach, Calif., on Tuesday.

Laguna Beach Sergeant Jim Cota said on Twitter that the cop auto was unmanned at the time of the impact, while the Tesla driver sustained minor injuries.

Tesla, asked about the accident, noted that drivers are not supposed to rely exclusively on Autopilot. The driver of the Tesla reportedly suffered some minor injuries, but nothing that required immediate treatment. The police cruiser was parked, and luckily no officers were inside when the Model S rammed into it. And another driver in Salt Lake City was injured in a crash when her vehicle hit a parked fire truck.

"It's super messed up that a Tesla crash resulting in a broken ankle is front page news and the (approximately) 40,000 people who died in USA auto accidents alone in past year get nearly no coverage", Musk said in a tweet in mid-May.

The National Transportation Safety Board opened an investigation into a fatal accident in March in which a Tesla Model X had Autopilot engaged when it crashed into a concrete highway divider in California.

The driverless feature comes packaged as standard in all Tesla vehicles, which the automaker's website describes as having "the hardware needed for full self-driving capability at a safety level substantially greater than that of a human driver". Tesla's autopilot system uses sensors, cameras, and radar to study the vehicle's surroundings and carry out automatic functions which include emergency braking. A Greek police official said on Tuesday that no other vehicle was involved in the Friday-night accident in northern Greece and no one was injured.

Tesla chief Elon Musk complained in a recent earnings call that accidents involving self-driving cars get sensational headlines while the potential for the technology to save lives is downplayed or ignored.
