Facebook says it removed 583 million fake accounts

Facebook said it was able to remove so many accounts and posts that violated its community standards thanks to its AI tools.

Along with fake accounts, Facebook said in its transparency report that it had removed 21 million pieces of content featuring sex or nudity, 2.5 million pieces of hate speech and nearly 2 million items related to terrorism by Al Qaida and ISIS in the first quarter of 2018.

"Whether it's spam, porn or fake accounts, we're up against sophisticated adversaries who continually change tactics to circumvent our controls", Mr Rosen said. The company disabled 583 million fake accounts, many within minutes of registration.

Even though it has been focusing on shutting down bogus accounts, Facebook has said that 3 to 4 per cent of its active monthly users are fake.

The posts that keep the Facebook reviewers the busiest are those showing adult nudity or sexual activity - quite apart from child pornography, which is not covered by the report.

It took down 21 million pieces of adult nudity and sexual activity in Q1 2018 - the company's systems had already flagged 96% before being reported.

Improved technology using artificial intelligence had helped it act on 3.4 million posts containing graphic violence, almost three times more than it had in the last quarter of 2017.

"It's a work in progress always", Guy Rosen, Facebook's vice president of product management, said in a briefing.

Facebook has been in hot water following allegations of data privacy violations by Cambridge Analytica, an election consultancy that improperly harvested information from millions of Facebook users for the Brexit campaign and Donald Trump's United States presidency bid.

As perhaps the most prolific social media service ever, Facebook plays a vital role in connecting us with friends and family around the world.

"We have a lot of work still to do to prevent abuse". Today's report, which will come out twice a year, can also show how well Facebook's artificial intelligence systems learn to flag items that violate the rules before anyone on the site can see them.

"For example, artificial intelligence isn't good enough yet to determine whether someone is pushing hate or describing something that happened to them so they can raise awareness of the issue".

Facebook has a policy of removing content that glorifies the suffering of others.

For years, Facebook has relied on users to report offensive and threatening content. And more generally, as I explained last week, technology needs large amounts of training data to recognize meaningful patterns of behavior, which we often lack in less widely used languages or for cases that are not often reported.

Publishing official numbers is part of the company's efforts to become more transparent ahead of global criticism. The report provided detailed data on just how much objectionable content CEO Mark Zuckerberg's famed social network had to moderate in recent months.
