LOCAL ELECTIONS 2018: Tory leader hails victory in Amber Valley

With more than half of the results declared, Labour were one council down with the Tories unchanged overall.

The leader of Kensington and Chelsea Labour group has conceded the party will not take control of the council but claimed the Conservatives had been "humbled". This was their biggest blow for the night, and understandably so in a predominantly Jewish area, with a nod to the Labour party's anti-Semitic problem.

The Labour leader launched his party's local election campaign in Trafford and is now able to celebrate Labour becoming the largest party in the Greater Manchester borough for the first time in 15 years.

Labour targets outside of London include Dudley, Walsall and Stockport, where they are now the largest party but fall short of an overall majority.

Mr Khan, speaking at the Wandsworth count, told the Press Association: "What I'd be disappointed by was if we didn't make progress across London in terms of the numbers of councillors". "I'm here for all the residents". Labour was expected to do well, based on their performance at the snap election.

The Conservatives gained Basildon and Peterborough, which had both been under no overall control.

The two major parties have failed to deliver a knockout blow to one another in a series of English local elections.

There was plenty to cheer for the Lib Dems, who gained Richmond from the Tories amid signs of a Brexit backlash in a strong Remain-supporting area.

He told BBC News: "Four years ago I was looking at a Conservative vote of 30% in the polls and today I expect Theresa May will be looking at significantly more than that, I imagine in the upper 30s, maybe near 40".

That said, the previous Conservative councillor for Walkden South, Les Turner, was still celebrating as he remains in post just down the road in Worsley, having switched to a notoriously safe seat for the party.

Mayoral elections are taking place in Hackney, Lewisham, Newham, Tower Hamlets, Watford and the Sheffield City region, but there are no polls in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. The vote may be supposed to be about local issues - schools, planning, trash collection - but many people see them as an opportunity to kick the party in national power.
