The England worldwide wants to stay with the Toffees but will seek assurances from whoever is in charge that he is part of their plans.

Talks between Rooney's camp and DC United are said to have gone well, with Everton willing to let the 32-year-old leave. Carlos Tevez and Javier Hernandez, Rooney's former United teammates, are also thought to have been considered by the club, as has former Manchester City and Liverpool striker, Mario Balotelli.

DC United have not responded to a request for comment.
