A lava flow from the volcano has already destroyed almost 50 buildings, including dozens of homes, and is now dangerously close to a geothermal plant on the island.

Native Hawaiians have long expressed frustration with the plant since it came online in 1989; they say it is built on sacred land.

The company also says it believes the lava's movement towards the station has halted and if anything, the molten rock now seems to be going in the other direction: the probability of it approaching the plant seems low, Ormat said. The plant has capacity to produce 38 megawatts of electricity, providing roughly one-quarter of the Big Island's daily energy demand. "This activity has destroyed the former Hawaii Geothermal Project site", it said referring to the warehouse.

Kilauea began erupting lava in a residential neighbourhood on May 3.

Lava destroyed a building near the plant, bringing the total number of structures overtaken in the past several weeks to almost 50, including dozens of homes. The remarkable footage was taken May 22 in the vicinity of the Puna Geothermal Venture, a plant that brings steam to the surface by way of several underground wells.

The latest update from the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said that a "moderate-level eruption" of lava was continuing to flow from Kilauea.

The plant's owner, Ormat Industries, sent a soothing message to investors just a week ago, but now the lava has arrived. It is responsible for 4.5% of Ormat's total geothermal power production worldwide.

Blue flames from burning methane have become part of the eruption of Kilauea volcano in Hawaii.

Eruptions from the volcano began on May 3.

On the volcano's east flank, almost two-dozen fissures are producing 15,000 tons a day of toxic sulfur dioxide, a level "much higher than seen in recent times", Bravender said.

Underscoring the eruption's dangers, a Hawaii man was hit by a flying piece of lava over the weekend said the molten rock almost sheared his leg in half.

These were new risks geologists warned of on Tuesday as Kilauea's 19-day eruption showed no sign of easing, with repeated explosions at its summit and fountains of lava up to 160 feet from giant cracks or fissures on its flank. Residents have been concerned about hazards if the lava flowed over the plant's facilities, or if heat generated would interact with various chemicals used on-site.
