Tiger Woods, who has not won a tournament for five years and who has barely played over the previous three seasons, remains the highest earning golfer with $57 million, with $55 million of it coming through endorsements.

Kohli's earnings are impressive, however he has yet to reach the heights of the man he replaced as India's skipper, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who Forbes listed at 22 on their top 100 in 2014 with an annual pay packet of $30 million.

According to Forbes, the earnings reported on the list include prize money, salaries, bonuses and endorsement incomes accrued between June 1, 2017 and June 1, 2018.

However, the victor of 23 single grand slam titles has only just returned to action after giving birth to her daughter Alexis nine months ago and, while her endorsements stood at $18 million, it was not enough to remain in the list.

He earned a $275m (£205m) payday for his boxing match in August against UFC star Conor McGregor, who is number four on the U.S. business magazine's list.

Brazil's Neymar to return from injury against Croatia

This year 40 National Basketball Association players made the cut in Forbes' annual look at the world's 100 highest-paid athletes, breaking the record of 32 set last year by hoopsters.

NBA's top earner LeBron James banked $85.5 million, including endorsements, over the last 12 months to rank sixth among the highest-paid athletes. However, Kohli's earnings are less than one-fourth of Mayweather, who earned $285 million in the same period.

Though the list of leading athletes consists of players from 11 different sports, basketball takes over the list with a top score 40 NBA players among the top 100, up from 32 in 2017.

Between them, the top 100 earned a collective $3.8bn during the past 12 months, which represents an increase of 23% from 2017.

There were four Boston-based athletes on the list, led by Irving at $36.1 million.

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry was the only other National Basketball Association player to feature in the top 10, with earnings of $76.9 million.
