President Moon Jae-in and his cabinet watched the start of the summit before their morning meeting at Cheong Wa Dae ("Blue House"), the South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's motorcade suddenly left the St. Regis hotel in Singapore Sunday night, arriving at one of the city's most famous tourist spots, the Gardens by the Bay, minutes later.

Body language experts said that in the 13 seconds or so the USA president held on to the hand of Kim for the first time, he projected his usual dominance by reaching out first, and patting the North Korean leader's shoulder.

"The entire world is watching the historic summit between (North Korea) and the United States of America", Kim told Lee through an interpreter when they met Sunday.

"He is not going to allow other people to suddenly take potshots at him hours before that summit", Kudlow said on CBS' Face the Nation.

The U.S. president will then address the media before flying out late Tuesday Singapore time.

Pompeo said he is "very optimistic" the meeting Tuesday between Trump and Kim "will have a successful outcome".

The country is also no stranger to hosting historic summits, having in 2015 been the site of a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping met Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou - the first time leaders from both sides met since Taiwan's separation from the mainland in 1949.

Trump has said he hopes to make a legacy-defining deal for the North to give up its nuclear weapons, though he has recently sought to minimize expectations, saying additional meetings may be necessary.

North Korea's central news agency on Monday proclaimed a "changed era", and promised talks on "the issue of building a permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean peninsula" as well as "the issue of realizing the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula". -North Korea contact, the official said.

The seemingly warm exchange between Mr. Trump and Mr. Kim on Tuesday was particularly striking, coming just days after a public clash between the USA president and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Still, he said, Mr. Trump's aim with Mr. Kim was clear: to build trust by creating a personal bond.
